The varnish that i've been using dries too quickly, it leaves brush marks and sets so fast that it's impossible to keep a wet edge.I've thinned it with turpintine and even tried cooling it. Final flattening is impossible without mapping. What can I do or add to make this an enjoyable experiance, and if I add anything will it affect the final composition of the film and therefore should I add it to all my coats?

varnishing is an interesting topic what brand are you using. oil based yes? it would be strange to add turpintine to spirit based but .... with no further info i'd say add a volitle oil. are you going to the meeting 10/1/06? bring your project maybe?

If you're using an oil varnish, try adding just a couple of drops of turpentine to it. It's hard to say how much--maybe 20 drops in one ounce of varnish. Be careful--if you use too much, the varnish will run right off the violin!

I'm using Joha oilbase a-1 varnish. I did add some turp but didn't want to add too much.I like the stuff because it does dry quick but I'd like more control over it.In the past I've tried Donald Felds varnish from Kremer Pigments but could never get that stuff to dry, even with colbalt drier and a light box.Maybe I'll contact my Joha supplier and ask them.Have you ever made Bill Fultons Varnish? I'm tempted.I'm attending the VMAAI compitition this week in Tuscon and plan on inquiring about this topic. Thanks,Towner

Try a little bit of kerosene, it'll slow the drying down and allow it to flow out better.

At our October get-together Jade Schulz showed a number of essential oils to use in thinning the resin being prepped for varnish. These were edible, massage, and aromatherapy oils so they cost less than those marketed by varnish suppliers. Contact Jade for more info.
