I'm new to the forum. Does anyone have experience with turpen resin varnish? I've made it and used it for more than twenty years, I noticed in a sample that after at least ten years or more it (this sample top) developed big ugly cracks. This top looked perfect for at least ten years, you wouldn't know anything was going on with it and then the cracks started developing all over. I had a violin develop cracks in the varnish after the owner left it in the trunk of a car. It was maybe a year old. I've never got any fiddles back with complaints so maybe it's an isolated case (wishful thinking).
I've made rosin varnish and I like it fine. Just not as well as turpen resin, I love the color you can get with the t/r. It's crystal clear and golden red brown.
If anyone has experience with this same thing and wants to talk about possible fixes (if there are any), please respond.

Maybe I should try a different approach. If anyone knows of a person who's familiar with Fulton's Varnish and it's potential problems, please email me their email address. It would be nice to here from the main man himself, but I'm sure he's quite busy. As I said, I've made other varnishes but nothing is as beautiful as this stuff.

Hi Berl. I know that Bill is hard to get hold of, but I'll do some digging and see what I can find out for you.

Bob, thanks that would be much appreciated. As I said I'm sure he's busy and has little time to respond to every request. I would like nothing better than to continue using Turpin Resin varnish. I've got varnish from Violin Varnish Manufacturing Co's. and nothing I've found looks as good in the jar or on the wood.
